A funny thing happened last week.
My virtual connections Claude Silver, Jill Katz and Mike Vacanti became real.
Like HUMAN REAL
Being a world away in Australia makes it difficult to create physical H2H connection but we didn’t let that stop us as we used technology to start to build deeper Human connection.
One Human in Melbourne Australia and Three Humans in NYC and Minnesota.
What could possibly go wrong?
We imagined an evening where Humans could just be Human. No tables with books for sale or some program peddled out that would blow your mind and “change” you forever.
Vulnerability was at the forefront of the evening with a dash of Heart, Candour, Courage and Care and Being Better. Not topics you would usually align to the way of the Business world today.
We had a fantastic evening with a group of like-minded Humans at the Humans First Club event. An evening created when four Humans simply connected as Humans. There’s seriously good intention in the photo above. We were just about to hit the stage and took a moment to stop and reflect on what had transpired over the past four months.

Humans are Humans
They’re not Numbers
They’re Not Titles
They’re not an Industry
They’re not defined by their Postcode
They’re full of emotions and good intention
We can get carried away with stories of how the titles, industry, geography, idle time etc make us the humans we are. Get trapped in the system that wants is to be robotic.
You see the old system is strong and it rewards titles, years of experience and numbers and helps us to create these stories in order to deceive ourselves, to build layers of armour or fix our masks to hide behind what we really want. To hold onto an antiquated system that turns us all into robots.
What if it was about Connection and Belonging?
Here’s what I’ve experienced this year that gives me hope that Humans all around the world are cut from the same cloth.
Having been in the fortunate position to deliver the Human Manager Experience in Nullawil, Victoria Australia (population 93) in June 2018
and then New York City, New York USA (population 8.6 million) October 2018 (with the amazing Jill Katz)
Being with two groups of Humans some 10,000+ miles apart and observing what went on in the room reinforces to me the essence of what makes us Human – we have:
- a hardwired system that causes us to quickly judge people, situations,
- a set of self limiting beliefs
- a reluctance to tell others what we are “fucking awesome” at
- a strong desire to support each other
- a strong, sneaky and deceptive cognitive immune system
- a wicked sense of humour
- a huge appetite for connection and belonging
When I’m asked about who should attend the experience there is always this bullshit criteria thrown up that has been created from the use of an antiquated view that humans are determined by their environment
- Who else will be in the room?
- What level are they at?
- What industry are they from?
- What type of experience do they have
- Why is it 2 Days?
- What will they be doing?
- How will this improve the ROI of our Organisation?
- My response is – If you have any Humans in your Organisation send them……………….
Regardless of the size of the city, the titles, years of experience, postcodes and back-stories Humans are Human first.
They want to be connected and belong.
Lets stop and reflect on this and drop the stories that keep us caught up in the bullshit we seem to cling to in order to justify a 100 year old system.
Humans are Humans – lets start to accept that.
